Oktoberfest
October, 2020 (of course)
We are so happy that we were able to host this event this year. A big thank you to Kevin Heimbaugh for all of his efforts to adjust and coordinate this event. Though it was different, it was a huge success. We had 44 Porsches parked on the grassy field beside the beautiful Montague Lake and a 2020 version of voting categories. All details in the next Der Wirbelsturm.

a drive toward the cure
October, 2020
Drive Toward a Cure....Topsail Edition --The weather was sunny and warm as 33 Porsches enjoyed a 2-hour drive around Topsail Island. We were escorted by local police which provided a “parade type” experience through all of Topsail Island. It was special as other cars stopped to allow us to pass. People came off the beach, out of their condos and lined the side of the roads to waive, snap photos and video the line of beautiful Porsches as we drove past.
This was a region fundraiser, that with the participant’s donations plus the Hurricane Region contribution, raised $4000. Drive Toward a Cure is a charity that raises funds and awareness to support the challenges of Parkinson’s Disease. Our region has supported this charity since they began. A big thank you to Mike Elder and Gregg Gaylord for creating this fantastic event.

NOGRAP (No Ordinary Gimmick Rally And Picnic)
October, 2020
This "NOGRAP" event challenged navigation skills, observations, knowledge of Porsche trivia, and a picnic. The route consisted of several legs. At the end of each leg, there was a safe place to pull over to answer questions about scenery along the route as well as a multiple-choice Porsche trivia question. The answer the team chose determined the route for the next leg. There was only one right answer and one right route. Every correct landmark and Porsche question earned one point. The team with the most points won. No one had a perfect score, but we all had a great time.

Drivenic de Hurdle Mill
September, 2020
A drive on scenic NC country roads followed by a picnic on a private, shady lawn -- This was DRIVENIC DE HURDLE MILL x2. To accommodate more people we ran this tour on two consecutive weekends. Not only did TJ and Vic plan a great event and enjoy both drives, the picnics satisfied everyone's craving for social contact.
And a special ceremony was had when Vic presented his lifelong 'navigator' with a heartfelt award. TJ was overwhelmed and just had to show everyone the plaque with the inscription: “Toni Jo, Best Navigator, Best Nurse, Best Partner, Tour de Lure 2020”.

GIMNIC Rally |
July, 2020
The Hurricane GIMNIC was a “Vic and TJ original” combining a Gimmick Rally with a Picnic. A gimmick rally differs from a standard rally in that it is not a timed event. Clues must be found, and questions answered along the way. The challenge was not speed but a keen observation of detail. Getting lost was part of the challenge and people shared that they laughed as they passed another Porsche each wondering who was going in the right direction and which clue did they find. he course ended at Vic and TJ’s yard where everyone enjoyed socially distant picnic each had packed. Points were tallied and prizes were awarded to six teams.

Cruise to Brews - we are back!
June, 2020
This was our first event from the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a gorgeous sunny Saturday afternoon with a great group of people excited to see each other. We met at University Mall Parking lot in Chapel Hill to sign waivers, listen to the driver’s briefing and line up for the drive. The masks, sanitizer and social distancing did not prevent everyone from having a fantastic time. 15 beautiful Porsches enjoyed the back roads from Chapel Hill to the Red Oak Brewery. Vic and TJ Friedmann lead group 1 with Bob Usner as the sweep. Group 2 was led by Eric and Barbara Rivera with Sherri Qualls as the sweep. The manager at Red Oak Brewery welcomed our group with special parking for our Porsches. We made our way to their beautiful, tree filled Biergarten where the staff served up cold draft beers and hot beer brats and pretzels. There were smiles all around as it was great to be back together again.

Leap Day - BBQ Run to Redneck BBQ Lab
February, 2020
The first BBQ run of 2020 was as success. Two groups were led by Bob Usner and John Tharaldsen through some twisty roads from Cary to Benson, NC. During the drive they passed a large group of bicyclists and followed a “not so agile” cement truck. All were rewarded with great tasting BBQ from the Redneck BBQ Lab. The owner welcomed the Hurricane Region by opening early just for our group. Margaret Picone and Adrienne Johnston were passengers so they captured some amazing photos to document the fun. Everyone is ready for the next run in March by our BBQ Meisters.

Porsches at the Battleship
February, 2020
It was a gorgeous but cold Carolina morning without a cloud in the sky when 44 Porschephiles gathered at USS North Carolina (BB-55). The objective was an history lesson while touring the battleship affectionately called “Showboat” for her heroic service in World War II. Initial fears of flooding at a full moon/high tide condition evaporated and all cars parked safely.
